Dear Editor,

Last month, I was chosen by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors to serve as the next president of Nicholls State University.

The opportunity to be president at a university with as much potential as Nicholls is exciting, and I feel especially fortunate to succeed President Stephen Hulbert, whose leadership made the university more vibrant, energetic and inclusive than ever. I look forward to carrying out initiatives that are already underway, while also collaborating with the community to address the challenges and possibilities that lie ahead.

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit campus and meet with members of the community. Many people asked what I hope to accomplish as the fifth president of Nicholls. My mission is direct and clear: I will focus on our students and providing them with opportunities for success. To do this I will encourage innovation and entrepreneurship on the part of our faculty and staff, and I will seek to continue and expand the great partnerships Nicholls has forged with companies, schools, organizations and individuals.

Athletics play a critical role in university life, and I want you to know that I’m committed to our Colonels. My experience as a high school varsity athlete, enthusiastic student/fan at four Division I schools and an engaged faculty member at an SEC school led me to truly value athletics programs not only as a developer for student athletes, but as a tool in advancing the university’s mission. My wife, Jeanne, is also deeply devoted to athletics as a former college and international level athlete. She served on the U.S. Olympic Committee and led the U.S. delegation to the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens as Chief of Mission.

As fans, the community plays a pivotal role in helping our teams to succeed. That’s why I want to personally invite you to wear your Colonel red and cheer on our student athletes at one of the many home games we host on campus throughout the year.

I look forward to seeing each of you in the stands. With your continued support, Nicholls and all of its programs will continue to thrive and grow.

Geaux Colonels!

Dr. Bruce T. Murphy,

President-Select, Nicholls State University
