Are you ready for high school football?

Are you ready to watch your favorite team storm the gridiron?

Are you ready to treat your ears to the pad-slapping thuds that emanate from the field?

Are you ready to indulge in the mouth-watering aroma of hamburgers and hot dogs that waft from the grills in the concession stands?

We certainly are.

The staff of the Tri-Parish Times attempted to capture the sites, sounds and smells of the upcoming high school football season (which kicks off this Friday) in “Prep ’07: Tackling the Basics” (Section C).

Inside, you’ll find in-depth previews and analysis of nine local teams (5A – Central Lafourche, H.L. Bourgeois, South Lafourche, South Terrebonne, Terrebonne and Thibodaux; 4A – Vandebilt and Ellender; 3A – E.D. White), as well as Nicholls State and LSU.

We kibitzed with former Saints quarterback and South Lafourche grad Bobby Hebert, a.k.a. “The Cajun Canyon” and compiled a list of “A, B, C’s” to educate the pigskin neophyte.

Hollywood has made a slew of movies that capture the essence of high school football, but nothing beats experiencing it in person.

There’s something Norman Rockwellian about the canvas of a high school football game – especially in southern Louisiana.

It’s interwoven into the fabric of our culture and defines us as a region.

And it creates memories that last a lifetime.

Best of luck to all area teams.

Play hard and play safe.
