When working 12- to 16-hour shifts it’s probably a good idea to step away from your workstation every now and then. Go ahead, peal your eyes off the computer screen, do a few toe touches and take a breather. Since your body can only go so far when fueled by coffee and Tootsie Rolls, this may also be an optimal time to grab a bite to eat.

The problem is you need something that won’t take you away from your desk for too long. Restaurants are time consuming – driving, parking, ordering, waiting, eating, paying – and fast food will just make you feel sluggish (and possibly gassy). So what do you do?

Here come the damsels to save the day!

Damsels in Distress at the Hot Box is a new business in the Houma area and they bring the food to you. Like a secret club you have to be on the list to receive a fax of their menu and daily specials, and once you order, you can continue to work until your food arrives.

The first time we ordered from this lunch-only operation, I chose the gumbo ($6.50) and my coworkers picked the shrimp boulette special and shrimp étouffée.

Our food arrived, and our damsel was indeed distressed. There was a mistake with the order – an extra gumbo in place of the étouffée – but we are easy to please and accepted the swap.

The gumbo came with rice and a side of potato salad. Fairly flavorful and filling this meal left me satisfied, but a bit underwhelmed. The shrimp boulette received two thumbs up, the tender serving carrying spice but not overwhelming the senses. The guest ordered as a side a bag of Zapp’s Potato Chips.

The next busy work day required another lunch delivery. Pot roast ($10) was the special.

I will go on record as saying that this was the best pot roast I have ever eaten.

Garlicky and tender, the meat was cooked to perfection. The rice absorbed all of the juices and was a perfect match. Soft corn bread, a cup of beans, sweet tea and an apple turnover came with the meal. It’s enough for two people (in my opinion) and everything was homemade and delicious. I went back to work with renewed vigor.

The good news … they accept credit cards, they are incredibly friendly, the delivery fee is waived if a certain number of meals are ordered and the food is great.

The bad news … they are brand new (about 3 months old) and still have a few kinks to work out. Be patient. You won’t be sorry.
