The Nicholls State University men’s basketball team made a statement on Wednesday night – that on any given night, they can compete with the top dogs in the Southland Conference.

The Colonels beat annual Southland power Stephen F. Austin 78-73 on Wednesday – the first time the Colonels beat their league rival since 2010.

With the win, the Colonels are now 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Even more impressive than the victory is how the Colonels did it.

They controlled the game from start-to-finish, trailing for just 10 seconds of the 40-minute game.

But it wasn’t all easy, either.

The Lumberjacks made several runs at Nicholls throughout the second half, erasing deficits with surges of offense and timely play.

The Lumberjacks tied the game at 69-all with 2:35 left to play, then again at 71-all with 1:25 to go.

But in the final minute, the Colonels sealed the deal, getting free throws by Brandon Moore to take the lead for good.

Thibodaux native Kevin Johnson made arguably the play of the night on the next possession, forcing a steal and drawing a foul, then making two free throws to stretch the Colonels’ lead to four.

After another empty possession, the Colonels put the game away at the free-throw line.

Moore led the Colonels with 25 points in the win. Jeremiah Jefferson and Gavin Peppers each had 15.

The Colonels will return to the floor on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Stopher Gym.
