All non-varsity sports/extracurricular activities in the Terrebonne Parish School District (TPSD) are suspended until after the Christmas break, Superintendent Philip Martin confirmed with the Times.

“It’s to limit person-to-person interaction, and that’s how COVID spreads,” he said. “There seems to be a surge going on in the community and we want to try and get ahead of it.”

Martin said postponing the activities is a precautionary measure.

The superintendent also discussed why varsity wasn’t included in the decision.

“Varsity is a little different in that varsity sports are regulated by Louisiana High School Athletic Association. None of the other ones are. Forfeits count for different things at varsity level,” he said. “This [non-varsity sports] is strictly just for the enjoyment of the game.”

“Also for seniors, this is their last shot at it,” he continued. ”Seventh and eighth graders, they are going to miss a week and a half. For seniors, that would be a different deal…If it becomes medically necessary, we will, but we’re not at that point yet.”
