Candidates have until the close of business today to apply for the vacant head football coaching position at Ellender Memorial High School.

As of now, the school’s principal said he isn’t sure how much interest the job is getting on the open market.

Patriots’ principal Blaise Pellegrin responded to an e-mail inquiry from The Times this morning asking for an update on the school’s head coaching position, which was made vacant last fall when outgoing coach Terry Washington was relieved of his duties.

In a short reply, Pellegrin said that applications will be collected until the close of business today and from there, the school will weed out submissions and look to begin the interview process with hopes of having a coach hired in the coming weeks.

“Today is the end of the application period and applications are submitted online to the office of personnel,” Pellegrin said. “So I really don’t even know how many applicants there are as of this time.”

The incoming coach will be taking over a team that will have a lot of returnees.

The Patriots were young in 2015, struggling to a losing season. After the season ended, Washington said he was informed that he wouldn’t be back with the school. He was Ellender’s head football coach and athletic director.

Washington said he never had the full support of Pellegrin, who in an e-mail statement at the time of Washington’s dismissal, said he appreciated the coach’s time with the team.

As of now, there are no indications of local coaches who may have applied for the job.
