Arguably the best coach in modern college baseball is headed to Thibodaux this month to help kick-off Nicholls’ 2013 season.

Legendry coach Skip Bertman will be this year’s guest speaker at Nicholls’ annual First Pitch Banquet, which will begin at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the Cypress Columns in Gray.

Tickets for the banquet are on sale now and are $60 for the general public and $30 for Colonels’ alumni.

Those who attend the event will be able to meet the Colonels’ 2013 team and also bid on a list of auction items.

Food and drinks will be provided at the event and all proceeds will go to Nicholls State baseball.

“I don’t think we expected the event to be as big of a hit as it was, but it’s attributed to the wonderful people involved with our program and Nicholls State University,” Colonels baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux said. “This year, we have a great speaker in Skip Bertman and we are looking forward to introducing the new team that we are excited to put on the field.”

In Bertman, the Colonels will be soaking in the wisdom of one of baseball’s greatest coaches.

The College Baseball Hall of Famer won seven SEC titles and five College World Series during his 18-year career at LSU.

He also spent nine years as the school’s athletic director.

In addition to the First Pitch Banquet, Nicholls will also hold its annual Alumni Game at Ray E. Didier Field.

The game will start at 10 a.m. The morning event will consist of both an Old Timers game and an Alumni game.
