One of the most experienced local basketball coaches got a memorable win on Tuesday night – for multiple reasons.

H.L. Bourgeois scored an 81-71 victory over Hahnville on Tuesday – a game that was monumental for coach Andrew Caillouet for two reasons.

For one, the victory clinched the District 7-5A Championship for the Braves – a great honor, considering the strength of the teams in the loaded local league.

But for Caillouet, the victory was also sweet because it was his 500th as a head coach – a lengthy career that dates back to 1990 when he started coaching at Thibodaux High.

This year’s team, Caillouet said, may be his best.

The Braves are a 26-win team and are considered by many to be among the favorites for the Class 5A crown.

“Our kids play so hard. It’s hard for opponents to match our effort and our skill over 32 varsity minutes,” Caillouet said earlier this season. “When we’re on, we think we’re one of the better teams in the state.”

The Braves wrapped up their regular season on Thursday against Terrebonne. No score was available at publication time.

Regardless of the outcome, they’ll host a home playoff game next week.
