The Nicholls State University men’s basketball team are Southland Champions.

The Colonels clinched a share of the conference title last night, scoring a 73-70 road win over Northwestern State in Natchitoches.

Win the win, the Colonels improved to 21-9 and 15-2 in the league. They can clinch the outright title on Saturday if they beat Southeastern Louisiana, which sits just one game back of the Colonels at 14-3.

Coach Richie Riley said the win and title are huge for Nicholls’ program – a sign of the team’s growth.

The Colonels were picked to finish 10th in the league in the preseason by Southland Conference coaches.

“What a night for our program,” Riley said. “I’m so happy for our guys and our community.”

The Colonels battled to get their latest win.

Despite just a 4-24 record, Northwestern played hard at home, leading Nicholls at halftime and throughout the game.

But Nicholls played well late in the game, led by 32 points from senior Roddy Peters, which sealed the win.
