Nicholls gave the LSU softball team extra outs on Wednesday night.

And the Lady Tigers made them pay – showcasing why they’re one of the best teams in the country.

The No. 8 Tigers beat Nicholls 12-1 at Tiger Park, scoring an 11-run fourth inning to secure a mercy-rule win after five innings.

LSU had 8 hits in their big inning, but the Colonels did their part to help out, committing four errors in the frame.

Those mistakes spoiled a solid start for Nicholls, which trailed just 1-0 after three innings against an LSU team that’s an annual contender to make the College World Series.

After falling behind 12-0, the Colonels showed late life, getting a run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Corynn Major to make the score 12-1. But the Lady Tigers got out of damage and sealed the win, improving to 29-6 on the season.

In defeat, Nicholls fell to 15-14.

The Colonels will return to the diamond this weekend with a crucial series at home against Sam Houston.

Nicholls will host the Bearkats at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, then at noon on Saturday – a three-game slate that could go a long way in allowing the Colonels to hold onto their current lead in the Southland standings.
