Pundits are high on the Nicholls football team in advance of the 2017 season.

The Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 poll came out earlier this week and the Colonels received votes in the poll – enough to place them 43rd in the nation to start the season.

Nicholls received votes briefly last season, but never cracked the Top 25. It was the first time since 2013 that the team received votes in the prestigious poll.

“We’re excited for the new year,” Colonels coach Tim Rebowe said before the start of camp. “The guys have had a good offseason and they’re ready to get back together and work to continue to improve as a team.”

The Colonels were one of five Southland teams who were either ranked or received votes in the poll.

Sam Houston State is ranked No. 3 and Central Arkansas came in at No. 15.

McNeese and Southeastern Louisiana join Nicholls as teams receiving votes in the preseason.

Last season’s champion, James Madison, starts the season No. 1. They earned 134 out of 163 first-place votes.

North Dakota State, Sam Houston, South Dakota State and Eastern Washington round out the top 5.

Nicholls opens its season on Aug. 31 at home against McNeese.
