A Nicholls State University lineman is one of 37 players nominated for a prestigious award for excellence as a scholar-athlete.

Offensive lineman Brian Hernandez is a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation’s 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments and given to the “absolute best football scholar-athlete in the country”.

Hernandez, a Baton Rouge native, is one of two Southland Conference players up for the award, joined by Stephen F. Austin’s Marlon Walls.

“It is important for us to showcase their success on the football field, in the classroom and in the community,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning. “This year’s semifinalists further illustrate the power of our great sport in developing the next generation of influential leaders.”

Hernandez is a three-year letter winner for Nicholls. He graduated magna cum laude in the spring with a degree in biology/pre med. Last year, he was name to the All-Academic All-Southland Conference team. After graduation, Hernandez plans to become a veterinarian.
