The Nicholls State University football team isn’t in the Top 25 yet.

But they’re getting awfully close.

The Colonels are receiving votes in both major Football Championship Subdivision polls this week – fresh off their thrilling last-second win over McNeese State to kick off the season.

Nicholls is ranked No. 30 in this week’s Coaches Poll, while ranking No. 36 in the STATS FCS poll.

The ranking marks the first time in Tim Rebowe’s tenure that the Colonels are getting this close to the Top 25 in the early stages of a season.

Last year, Nicholls was receiving votes in the polls in the middle of the season, but dropped out of consideration after a tough-luck last month to close out.

The Colonels will return to the field on Saturday night against arguably their toughest opponent on the 2017 schedule, SEC power Texas A&M.

The Colonels and Aggies will kick off Saturday at 6 p.m. in College Station. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

The Times will be in College Station covering the game. Check back for photo galleries and other coverage.
