The Nicholls State University football team didn’t have room to add much on National Signing Day.

But the Colonels used what little they had to snag some of the best players in the Houma-Thibodaux area and beyond.

The Colonels unveiled their 2018 Signing Class on Wednesday – a 10-player group which features six high school signees and four players who land in Thibodaux from the college ranks.

Coach Tim Rebowe said the group is small in number because Nicholls simply didn’t have many scholarships to give.

But the players added with help the team right away in their quest to make the playoffs again in the 2018 season.

All 10 players are Louisiana natives – a bit of a staple for the Colonels under Rebowe.

“This is a good group,” Rebowe said. “It’s not a big group, but it’s a good group. They are all guys that we like and guys who we think can come into our locker room, add to our team and compete. We’re pleased. It’s a credit to our coaches who went around the state and made relationships and did the things we needed to do to add these players to our team.”

One thing to note: the 2018 signing class for Nicholls is awfully offensive-heavy.

The Colonels signed almost exclusively offensive players in this class – something that was not necessarily by design.

In December during the early signing period, Rebowe said that he and his staff would hit the road hard – looking for defensive linemen and defensive backs to balance out the offense-heavy mix.

But Nicholls didn’t take any at either position, which would indicate that some players the team was chasing chose other schools leading up to signing day.

The defender in the class is Breaux Bridge native and junior college transfer Korey Louis, who lands at Nicholls after recording 64 tackles last season for Southwest Mississippi Community College. Louis stands 6-feet, 2-inches and weighs 220 pounds. He has an athletic pedigree. His older brother, Lamar Louis, was a standout at LSU.

Another possible defender in the class is St. Charles Catholic athlete Lloyd Nash – a guy who Rebowe said can either slot as a receiver or a defensive back.

With Nicholls’ failure to get defenders in the class, he may be in the secondary to start his career – a guy who Rebowe said is a big-time football player.

“He’s just a tremendous athlete,” Rebowe said. “He’s going to be a great Colonel.”

In the late period, Nicholls did add playmaking and size to its class – two things that please the coach.

The Colonels had seven of their 10 signees ink on the early signing period. This past week, they added three more names to round out the 10-player group – two transfer players and a prep signee.

The prep signee is a local – South Lafourche offensive lineman Chad Cheramie.

A big-bodied offensive lineman who can play all five positions up front, Cheramie was a multi-time All-District player for the Tarpons – a four-year starter.

Rebowe said he likes Cheramie’s competitive edge, pointing to his desire to block down the field and be a pull blocker on run plays.

Cheramie is one of two local signees in this class, joining Central Lafourche wide receiver David Robinson, who inked in the early period.

“He is active and he likes to hit away from the line of scrimmage,” Rebowe said. “Those are two things that are hard to teach.”

Rounding out the new group of signees are a pair of transfers who are capable of putting the ball into the end zone.

The Colonels picked up LSU transfer tight end Bry’Kiethon Mouton and UL-Lafayette transfer receiver Gabe Fuselier to round out their signees for the year.

Mouton was a two-year letter winner at LSU – a guy capable of blocking, running as a fullback or catching passes as a tight end.

Fuselier was a big-time playmaker for the Ragin’ Cajuns – a guy who should be an instant-impact performer for Nicholls.

He caught 75 passes with UL-Lafayette – mostly working as a slot receiver.

The Colonels will begin spring practices on Feb. 28 and the team’s spring game is set for March 24.
