Nicholls State University apparently has its new men’s basketball coach.

HoopDirt.com reported this afternoon that assistant coach Austin Claunch will be named the Colonels’ new coach. He will replace his old boss, Richie Riley, who led the Colonels to a 20-win season last year and then took the job at South Alabama.

Multiple sources confirmed to The Times that Claunch beat out four other finalists, including LSU-Alexandria head coach Larry Cordaro and Louisiana native Quannas White, who is an assistant coach at Houston.

Claunch is cut from the same mold as Riley – a young, energetic coach who will try and replicate the success of his successor.

He landed at Nicholls after working at Clemson. Before that, he spent time at George Mason.

Attempts to contact Nicholls administration were not available as of Wednesday afternoon.

A source close to others in the process said that candidates were told Claunch’s hire was imminent.
