It’s been hot in Louisiana.

Meteorologists say it’s because of high pressure parked over the South.

But sports fans may think it’s due to the powerful heat radiating off the right shooting arm of Nicholls senior guard Lafayette Rutledge.

Rutledge made 11 3-pointers in Wednesday night’s 96-79 victory over McNeese, setting both the single-game and season record for made 3-pointers.

Rutledge also had a career-high 34 points in the win. Senior Roddy Peters added 24 points and 11 assists.

“I’m a shooter, Rutledge said. “I do this day in and day out. I knew I was bound for another crazy night, so why not this one?”

Rutledge’s big day sparked a huge win for Nicholls.

The Colonels fell behind 16-4 early, but then went on a 16-0 run to take control for good.

Nicholls led 53-36 at halftime and every time McNeese made a run, Nicholls had an answer, which sealed the easy win.

The Colonels are now 13-2 in Southland play – still in first place in the league.

They’ll return to action Saturday at home against UNO.
