The Nicholls State University men’s basketball team is now alone atop the Southland Conference.

The Colonels beat Lamar 79-74 on Wednesday night in Beaumont, Texas, improving to 13-8 on the season and 7-1 in conference games.

That win, combined with other results around the conference on Wednesday now have the Colonels alone atop the standings in first place – the only team in the league with just one conference loss.

Senior transfers Tevon Saddler and Roddy Peters were huge in the win, combining for 50 points to power a Nicholls offense which shot 60 percent from the field in victory.

The Colonels return to action Saturday at Stopher Gym with a 6:30 p.m. tip against Southeastern. The Lions are also near the top of the league, currently sitting with a 6-2 record.

Before the game, Nicholls will dedicate its coach to former coach Rickey Broussard.
