The Nicholls State University men’s basketball team got maybe its biggest win of the season on Wednesday night – a victory that reaffirmed to the rest of the Southland Conference that this team is for real.

The first-place Colonels beat second-place Sam Houston State 73-72 in Stopher Gym – a victory which improved Nicholls to 11-2 in conference play.

The Colonels led by double digits throughout the second half, but a late rally by Sam Houston made the game close.

Senior Jahvaughn Powell made the game-winning basket in the final minute to seal the victory for the Colonels.

“We knew it was going to be a battle,” Nicholls coach Richie Riley said. “They’re well-coached, tough and at the top of the league for a reason. I loved how our guys just refused to lose. It was a great win for us. Anytime you can win in a 1-2 matchup in our league is huge – whether it’s by one or by 20.”

The Colonels return to action Saturday at Central Arkansas.
