Just one win short.

That’s the story of the season for two Tri-parish prep volleyball teams.

Both E.D. White and Vandebilt lost in the State Finals this weekend at the LHSAA’s State Farm Volleyball State Tournament in Kenner.

The Lady Cardinals fell in five sets to Teurlings Catholic in Division III – a back and fourth match that kept fans on the edges of their seats throughout the duration.

In Division II, Vandebilt was swept by St. Thomas More in the final match of the season for each team. With the loss, the Lady Terriers were denied their elusive first-ever state championship in the sport.

No. 2 E.D. White and No. 1 Teurlings stole the show on Center Court at the Pontchartrain Center.

The Lady Cardinals started Saturday afternoon’s match in a hole, dropping the opening set 22-25 to the Lady Rebels, who lost in the quarterfinals of the Division III bracket last season.

But after the slow start, E.D. White recovered in style and appeared well on its way to a second-ever state championship.

The Lady Cardinals rallied from the opening-set loss to square the match with a 25-22 victory in the second.

They took control in the third set, landing their first lead of the championship match with a 25-21 victory.

In the fourth set, E.D. White sat just a couple points from taking home the championship trophy. The Lady Cardinals and Lady Rebels pushed past regulation points with no team owning the necessary two-point lead to earn the set.

Once past the 25-point threshold, Teurlings Catholic pushed the match to a fifth, and decisive set, scoring a 25-27 victory to keep the match alive.

Once in the winner-take-all set, both teams showed why they were among the best in Louisiana. In a back-and-forth set, Teurlings earned service with a 14-15 lead.

They cashed in their match point opportunity and took home the championship with the two-point victory in the final set.

The one-two punch of Hilliary Washington and Shea Hebert were the biggest culprits blockading the Lady Cardinals from the championship. Washington was named the Division III Most Outstanding Player after pounding 20 kills and recording 27 assists in the match. Hebert added 18 kills of her own.

The loss marks the second-straight season E.D. White finishes just a few points short of the state championship.

The Lady Cardinals lost 9-15 in the final set of the season last year in a five-set defeat at the hands of Ursuline Academy.

With the loss, E.D. White has now finished as the state runner-up eight times in its history. The loss ended the team’s season with a 31-12 record.

Just hours after the thriller between the Lady Cardinals and Lady Rebels, Vandebilt Catholic struggled to find a groove on Center Court in the Division II Finals.

Just a day after beating No. 2 Lakeshore in a convincing straight-sets win, No. 6 Vandebilt fell behind early, falling 16-25 in the opening set to St. Thomas More – the defending state champions.

The Lady Terriers played better in the second set, but couldn’t even the match. St. Thomas More went up two-sets in a close, 25-23

They closed the match just minutes later, scoring a 25-20 victory to cap the championship trophy.

The loss ended the Lady Terriers’ season with a 23-17 record. It also ended the hot-streak that Vandebilt was on in the past few weeks.

But as the theme of the day suggests, it was one win short of history for the Lady Terriers’ program.
