E.D. White’s bid for a volleyball championship fell short by just six points.

The No. 2 Lady Cardinals fell in the Division III State Championship Match, losing a heartbreaking, but thrilling match to No. 1 Ursuline Academy in five sets Saturday afternoon.

The final set was decided 15-9 – a series of points that ended E.D. White’s runner-up season with a 31-14 record.

It marks the seventh time in school history that E.D. White finishes as the volleyball state runner-up.

The Lady Cardinals won the first and third sets 25-19 and 26-24, respectively. They dropped the second and fourth sets 25-20 and 25-16.

The loss stopped E.D. White short of its second-ever state title.

The Lady Cardinals won its only title four seasons ago.

Before getting to the finals, E.D. White had to defeat arguably its biggest rival.

The Lady Cardinals trumped Vandebilt in the semifinals in four sets (25-17, 26-24, 21-25, 26-24) in a hotly contested match that saw each set go down to the wire.

To earn bids to the quarterfinals, the Cardinals beat Brusly, while the No. 6-seeded Lady Terriers upset No. 3 Teurlings Catholic in straight sets.

While E.D. White pushed into the state finals, the rest of our local participants didn’t have as much luck in the Pontchartrain Center.

In Division I, No. 8 H.L. Bourgeois fell in the quarterfinals to No. 1 Mt. Carmel in a straight-sets defeat (25-21, 25-17, 25-23).

To earn their way into the quarterfinals, the Lady Braves scored a decisive home win against Destrehan in the second round of the playoffs.

The loss ended the Lady Braves’ season with a 31-10 record.

In Division I, Central Catholic had its state championship dreams fall two victories short.

The No. 3-seeded Lady Eagles lost to Metairie Park Country Day in the semifinals during a four-set battle (25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 25-11).

Central Catholic’s foe went on to win the state championship match the next day in a four-set victory over No. 1-seed Episcopal of Acadiana.

Prior to their semifinal setback, the Lady Eagles scored a straight-set win against St. Martin’s Episcopal.
