Ellender football coach David McCormick confirmed to The Times this afternoon that Friday’s game between the Patriots and Patterson Lumberjacks will no longer be played at South Terrebonne High School’s field.

McCormick said the game will now be played at Patterson after school officials surveyed the field and deemed that it was unsafe to host an athletic competition.

South Terrebonne High School’s field is used by both the Gators and Ellender. Area middle schools also use the field throughout the year.

With consistent rains throughout the summer, the low-lying field has taken on a lot of water in recent weeks, and the precipitation, plus the heavy usage has rendered the field unplayable.

McCormick said the field will be evaluated on a week-by-week basis.

The coach said losing a home game is a blow, but is the right thing to do.

“I couldn’t imagine playing on there and getting a kid severely hurt because it’s just not what it needs to be,” McCormick said. “It’ll hurt us at the gate, but it’s the right thing to do.”

The Patriots played at home Friday night against Bonnabel and won a 12-0 victory.

Video images from Friday’s game show a highly saturated field, which turned into a mud bowl by the second half of play.
