Former Ellender standout Gibby Talbot wowed Tri-parish sports fans the past several seasons with his size, strength and all-around basketball ability.

Those same talents are slowly being filtered into Louisiana Tech’s repertoire as the team heads toward a possible berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Houma native enjoyed the biggest game of his collegiate career this past week when he recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds in the Bulldogs’ 118-48 thrashing of Central Baptist.

The outburst was the first double-double of the true freshman’s young collegiate career.

“In time, Gibby’s going to be a heck of a player,” Louisiana Tech coach Michael White said of the former Ellender star. “Hopefully we can find spots during the remainder of this season where we can throw him in there.”

Talbot’s freshman season has been a memorable one for the Louisiana Tech team.

The Bulldogs are arguably Louisiana’s best college basketball team this season with a 24-3 record and a perfect 14-0 mark in Western Athletic Conference play.

Louisiana Tech was ranked No. 25 in this past week’s Associated Press poll – a mark they have earned thanks to a school-record 16-straight victories.

Talbot has played sporadically throughout his true freshman season as he has become acclimated to the Bulldogs’ up-tempo scheme.

The 6-foot, 10-inch mammoth has played in 11 games and averages three points and two rebounds per game.

In addition to the double-double, he also owns two separate games where he scored six points.

White said once Talbot matures and gets more consistent on defense, he will be an impact player in Ruston.

The coach added that Talbot is a major part of the team’s future.

“He’s gotten himself in much better condition and he’s a kid that it seems like always produces offensively because he throws his body around,” White said. “That ball is like a magnet to his hands. He’s got real quick hands and the ability to go snatch the ball. He’s going to be a real good player.”

Louisiana Tech returns to the floor tomorrow against Utah State.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
