Prep football Playoff Week 1By the Numbers

1 – The number of local teams that remain in the state playoffs. Vandebilt is the sole survivor in the field after South Lafourche, Terrebonne, E.D. White, Patterson, Houma Christian and Central Catholic bowed out in the opening round.

392 – The number of days that passed between South Lafourche’s past two losses. After a 12-game winning streak, the Tarpons lost to Ruston in the opening round of the playoffs.

39 – The number of rushing yards Vandebilt contained Huntington halfback Damien Jiggetts to in Friday’s win. Jiggetts had more than 1,800 yards during the regular season.

Playoff Week 1Players of the Week

Bronze – South Lafourche quarterback Colby Callais – The Tarpons got their first loss of the season Friday. But it surely wasn’t a fault to Callais. The South Lafourche senior completed 17-of-27 passes for 277 yards in the defeat.

Silver – Terrebonne quarterback Colby Stewart – Against a fierce Barbe defense, the Tigers’ signal caller stood tall, rushing for 121 yards. Terrebonne hung with Barbe until the late stages of the game.

Gold – Vandebilt Catholic quarterback Elijah McGuire – You know you’re good when you can “quietly” rush for 214 yards with a touchdown. It didn’t seem like McGuire was doing a heck of a lot Friday, but the final stat sheet said otherwise. Where he arguably did his most damage was in the air, where he tossed two touchdown passes. If the passing game continues to click, look out.

The Final Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)

1. Vandebilt – As the only team left standing, Vandebilt will go down as the local champion in our Super Six. The Terriers have really meshed into a balanced team with good defense and skill position players surrounding All-World quarterback Elijah McGuire. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them continue their playoff push for another few weeks – at the least.

2. South Lafourche – South Lafourche was perfect all season, but imperfect when it mattered most, losing in Friday’s opening round game against Ruston – a true bear of a No. 25 seed. The Tarpons really enjoyed magical ride this year in coach Dennis Skains’ first season. They’ll be back – no doubt about it.

3. Patterson – The Lumberjacks took a long time to mesh, but by season’s end, they were one of the best teams in all of Class 3A. I think that was evident with their narrow defeat at the hands of No. 2 Notre Dame. With a better seed, who knows how far they could have pushed this season? They should have gotten it, too. Heck, they finished 7-3 on the season. With a slew of talent returning, they are going to be our preseason pick as the No. 1 team in the area in next season’s first Power 6 rankings.

4. Terrebonne – Terrebonne really came into its own in the back-half of the season and played inspired football. If the team could have meshed sooner, they’d have earned a higher seed and would have had a far better shot at winning a playoff game or two. Facing Barbe is tough duty.

5. E.D. White – The Cardinals just lacked explosiveness in 2012. The team won a slew of games early in the season, but couldn’t muster enough points to beat a lot of the high-powered offenses in the district. E.D. White has one of the best coaching staffs in the Tri-parish area. We fully expect them to right their problems and return with a solid team in 2013. They better – their district next season is likely going to include both St. Charles Catholic and John Curtis. Ouch. That’s like being in the SEC West.

6. Central Catholic – When you’re a school the size of Central Catholic, losing a player like Lloyd Grogan to graduation is a huge void. The Eagles never quite replaced the former star’s versatility and limped through its schedule before bowing out of the playoffs early.
