South Lafourche High School will have a new football coach in the 2020 season.

Multiple sources confirmed to The Times this morning that coach Blake Forsythe was relieved of his football coaching duties this morning, ending his three-year tenure with the school.

The team was informed of the school’s decision after a meeting with school administration.

Forsythe was 11-21 in his three seasons with the team. In 2019, the team finished 3-7 in the regular season, earning the No. 31 seed in the Class 4A State Playoffs. They lost to Neville in the opening round.

The Times has made attempts to reach principal Gaye Cheramie this morning. We expect to make contact with Mrs. Cheramie sometime today and will add her comments to this story as she gets back with us.

Forsythe’s dismissal comes after a rough two years of football in Galliano.

The coach had success his first season, finishing 6-4 in the regular season and hosting a first-round playoff game – a loss to Tioga.

But in the 2017 offseason before the 2018 season, Forsythe adopted a triple-option offense that never clicked the way he hoped with a youthful roster.

In the 2018 and 2019 regular seasons, the Tarpons scored 255 points combined. In 2017 alone, they scored 249 points.

In 2019, the Tarpons were young with a sophomore quarterback and fullback in their option set. The team also had poor numbers with sometimes just 20-25 kids playing on Friday nights.

The team started 0-6, then found its stride, winning 3 of the final 4 games to earn a postseason bid.

But the hot finish wasn’t enough for the school to avoid making a change.

Applications will be taken for the coaching position in the coming weeks.

Forsythe is expected to remain at the school through the end of the school year, maintaining his role as an assistant track and field coach.
