Week 1 – By the Numbers:

445: The number of rushing yards Thibodaux amassed in a comeback win against Shaw. The Tigers gutted the Eagles throughout the second half of the game to earn their second-straight win over the Eagles.

382: The Covenant Christian Academy Lions traveled 382 miles round-trip on Friday night to take on Class 4A opponent Peabody – a team that topped CCA 53-30 a year ago. But this time, the Lions stood tall and ripped their 4A foe, storming to a 39-26 win.

96: Down three points and with Vandebilt driving down the field for what would have likely been a game-winning score, the E.D. White defense buckled and forced a turnover on Friday night, getting the ball back to the team’s offense. With it, the Cardinals drove 96 yards over four minutes to rally to beat longtime rival Vandebilt 21-17. The dramatic ballgame marked the first win for Cardinals’ head coach Chris Bergeron. It was also the first prep game as a head coach for Terriers’ head man Jeremy Atwell.

74: After struggling in a blowout loss at the South Lafourche jamboree, Central Lafourche showed some hustle and some pride in their season opener against Franklin. The Trojans rolled to a 24-0 victory and held their foe to just 74 yards of total offense, controlling the tempo throughout.

7: The number of turnovers committed between Ellender and Madison Prep in Friday night’s game, which was played on a soggy, slippery field at South Terrebonne. Madison Prep took advantage of four Ellender giveaways and romped the Patriots in a shutout win.

Week 1 Players of the Week:

Bronze: CCA halfback Jordan McKay – In a key opening game against Class 4A foe Peabody, McKay was a terror, rushing 14 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns. His effort, combined with solid blocking and timely defense helped give the Lions arguably the biggest win in their short existence.

Silver: Thibodaux High School offensive line – The Tigers were down and facing an early-season loss on Friday night against Shaw – always a tough out in Class 5A. But thanks to an absolutely dominant performance from Thibodaux’s offensive line, the Tigers rallied and scored an opening-night win. Thibodaux rushed for 445 yards in the win, gashing the Eagles for huge chunks of yardage throughout the game.

Gold: E.D. White quarterback Ben Sposito – As always, the E.D. White and Vandebilt Catholic football game was a thriller – a back and forth battle that was well worth the price of admission for everyone in attendance. But the star of this year’s tilt has to be Sposito, who engineered a 96-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes of the game to anchor E.D. White to a thrilling comeback victory that could have huge implications on seeding in the Division II State Playoffs.

The High-Five

1. South Terrebonne – The Gators seem like a pretty safe bet to hold this spot for an awfully long time this season. With experience throughout the depth chart and playmaking on both offense and defense, South Terrebonne just might be the king of local prep football for 2014. After scoring a 43-14 victory over H.L. Bourgeois in the opener – a game played in a mud pit at Terrebonne’s stadium, the Gators seem to be off on the right foot.

2. Thibodaux – For years, Thibodaux High School halfback Donta Johnson bowled through defenders in the Tigers’ potent spread offense. With Johnson gone to graduation, it looks like more of the same for Thibodaux, who gashed Shaw on Thursday night en route to a key win. The Tigers will look to roll over their momentum next week against Vandebilt – a team that topped Thibodaux a year ago.

3. E.D. White – Kudos to Cardinals coach Chris Bergeron for getting the first win of his young head coaching career. Here’s to many more in the future! The Cardinals rebounded from a poor showing at the jamboree and showed a lot of heart and moxie to rally past rival Vandebilt in a game that will likely go down as one of the best in the 2014 season. Isn’t it crazy how Vandebilt and E.D. White always seem to play a thriller.

4. South Lafourche – South Lafourche took a beating on Friday night at the hands of Landry-Walker. But guess what? Landry-Walker might be the best public school team in all of Louisiana. We’ll start to punish the Tarpons a little more heavily in our rankings if they struggle again on Friday night against South Plaquemines – something that we don’t expect to see.

5. Terrebonne – A day before the majority of our area’s teams opened 2014, Terrebonne quietly scored a blowout win over Redemptorist on Thursday night. The Tigers are a sleeper team this season. There’s not much buzz surrounding those guys for some reason, but with playmakers surrounding the depth chart, good things can happen.

Quote of the Week:

“We took one on the chin. They are a great football team and we’re going to regroup and keep pushing, but anytime the score looks like that, we’re not happy with the way the game went, you know?”

-South Lafourche coach Dennis Skains
