The state championship wasn’t in the cards for the Southland Hogs this year.

The CCA-based travel team, which pools players from all around Lafourche and Terrebonne lost 5-4 to Pedal Valve this afternoon at the American Legion State Tournament, ending the team’s season two wins short of the State Title.

The Hogs trailed for a lot of the game, then stormed back, surging ahead 4-2 in the late innings.

But Pedal Valve had another gear, plating three in the final frame to secure the thrilling, one-run win.

They will now move on to the Finals at 7 p.m. at Delgado.

Hogs coach Joe Teuton said earlier this summer that no matter how the state tournament went, he was proud of his team. He added a passionate post on Facebook on Thursday before the game, urging his players to leave everything on the field – a plea that the team met in stride.

“I am proud of these men,” Teuton said earlier this summer. “It’s a showcase of the talent in our area, and there’s an awful lot of it here locally. They’re a joy to be around and a pleasure to coach.”

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Congrats to the Hogs’ players and coaches on an amazing season. There can only be one team who wins the last game of the season. This year, it wasn’t you guys, but the lessons learned will make everyone involved better ballplayers in the future!
