Just more than a month remains before the Third-Annual Houma Heart and Soles Half-Marathon and 5K at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.

To help participants prepare for the big day, Terrebonne General Medical Center and the Cardiovascular Institute of the South would like to offer training tips to the community.

TGMC will write a weekly column series each week leading up to the race.

In this week’s entry, the hospital lists a training schedule and touts the importance of hydration.

Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) and the Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) want to help you train for the upcoming Houma Heart and Soles Half-Marathon & 5K, a race to raise funds for cardiovascular screenings and education in the Terrebonne Parish community.

Training for a half-marathon can seem like a big undertaking, but the rewards are remarkable. Running a half-marathon can improve your overall health by raising your levels of good cholesterol, increasing your lung function, boosting your immune system and lowering your risk of developing blood clots.

The schedule below shows the recommended workouts for each day. Feel free to flip flop days as necessary. Just remember you should have at least one day of rest with no cardio activity each week. Your rest days are just as important as you training days.

5 weeks to go schedule

Monday – 45 minutes of stretching and strength training

Tuesday – 4.5-mile run easy; focus on breathing and posture

Wednesday – 3-mile run or cross training (swimming, biking and elliptical)

Thursday – 4.5 mile run easy and 20 minutes of stretching and strength training

Friday – Rest

Saturday – 50 minutes of cross trailing

Sunday – 8 mile run

Hydration and nutrition are equally important parts of the training equation. Remember to drink lots of water throughout the week to keep you hydrated for your workouts, and always rehydrate after training.

Ideally, you should start out with some running experience before beginning to train for a half-marathon. Always consult your doctor before making a drastic change to your exercise plan.

The 3rd Annual Houma Heart and Soles Half-Marathon and 5K will take place on Saturday, December 1 at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.

For more information about the race, those interested can contact www.tgmc.com/halfmarathon.

Local cross country runners begin a race. TGMC is preparing locals for the upcoming Houma Heart and Soles Half-Marathon, which will take place on Dec. 1.
