A local pitcher is likely about to begin his professional baseball journey.

LSU junior righty and E.D. White graduate Cam Sanders was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th Round (368 overall) of the 2018 MLB Draft.

Sanders, was an 18th Round pick last year, so his season at LSU improved his standing and he’s “likely” to sign, according to a radio interview he did on Wednesday in Baton Rouge.

Sanders threw 38.2 innings for the Tigers this past season and struggled mightily with his control at times, posting a 1-0 record with a 5.59 ERA and 24 walks and six hit batters in his innings.

But Sanders’ stuff is electric and when over the plate, he’s tough to deal with. Sanders improved his draft positioning at the SEC Tournament giving LSU three dynamite appearances without a run allowed.

He also started LSU’s regional win over Northwestern State last weekend.

Sanders has the option to return to LSU for his senior season if negotiations break down with the Cubs, but he said he’s excited to begin his professional career and start working toward the MLB.

Sanders has that type of pedigree.

He’s the son of Scott Sanders, who pitched in the majors for nearly a decade.
