Ellender’s Lewis headlines four Nicholls signees


The Nicholls athletic department announced last Tuesday they have signed four players to their 2010 men’s basketball recruiting class. Houma native and Ellender High School standout, forward Trevon Lewis headlines the class after averaging 24 points and 12 rebounds per game his senior season. St. Augustine’s Elridge Moore, St. Louis’s Keelan Garrett and South Grand Prairie High School’s Chris Talkington also round out the class.

“We are very excited to have these young men join our Nicholls family,” said Colonels coach J.P. Piper. “I know they will be a valuable asset to our program, both on and off the court.”


Bourgeois SC track and field athlete of the week


Nicholls javelin thrower and Tri-parish native Leslie Bourgeois was awarded the honor after a 47.81-meter throw at the Cole-Lancoln Twilight meet last week.

She is the second Colonel to win the honor in the past four weeks.


Women’s volleyball adds one more to signing class


The Nicholls volleyball team polished off their recruiting class this past week by announcing they have signed Lauren Chapman of College Park High School in The Woodlands, Texas.

Chapman lands in Thibodaux after being a first-team All-District selection at College Park. She led her team in blocks per game in high school.


“Lauren will be a great addition to our program,” said Colonels’ volleyball coach Chris Laird. “I like the fact that she can play both the right and left side positions.”


LSU’s Jackson wins Honda Award

Fresh after winning another individual national championship, LSU senior gymnast Susan Jackson was named the winner of the Honda Sports Award for the nation’s top collegiate female gymnast.

Jackson is the first LSU gymnast to receive the award. She did so after winning the NCAA All-Around and beam national championships in her senior season. Jackson also has a vault national championship in her career in Baton Rouge.

“To be recognized among such a talented group of gymnasts is very gratifying,” Jackson said. “The outstanding level of support from my teammates and coaches has been instrumental to my success both inside and outside of the gym.”

Bertman, Walker on CWS Legends Team

Two LSU baseball icons, former coach Skip Bertman and former second baseman Todd Walker, have been given one of their sports highest honors last week as they were named to the College World Series Legends Team.

Bertman was the driving force behind five LSU national championships in the sport from 1991-2000. Walker was an All-American infielder for the Tigers from 1993-94.

The team is made up of 28 members and it is in honor of this year being the final year the College World Series will be played in the old Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium.

Soccer’s Isom wins Wilma Rudolph Award

For the past few seasons, LSU goalkeeper Mo Isom has collected awards due to her athleticism in the net for the Tigers’ soccer team.

This past week, Isom was honored for her work in the classroom and she was named the 2010 Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award.

Each year, the award is given by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics. The player chosen has to have, “overcome great personal, academic and emotional odds to achieve academic success while competing in intercollegiate athletics.”
