Those living in St. Mary Parish will have some visitors today – visitors with goodwill and charity in mind.

That’s because the annual Tour de Rouge bicycle group will begin their day in Abbeville and will cruise through St. Mary before coming to their resting spot for the night in Morgan City.

Proceeds from the event go to benefit the American Red Cross Chapters along the Gulf Coast from Houston to New Orleans.

The tour began on Sunday in Houston and over the course of the week; they plan to make a 526-mile voyage, ending in New Orleans on Friday.

The parading tour travels approximately 90 miles per day going approximately 15 mph, with rest stops organized every 20-25 miles along the road.

The tour provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to those in the field, as well as refreshments.

At the end of each day, the riders rest in a city along the route and are treated to nightly entertainment.

During last year’s stop in St. Mary, the crew enjoyed Zydeco music by Waylon Thibodeaux and a gumbo dinner and bread pudding at the Everett Street Art Gallery.
