All year long, local prep baseball coaches said the same thing – almost like a broken record.

“There are a lot of good teams in this area,” South Lafourche coach Andrew Ravaglia said earlier this season.

So far in the postseason, it looks like the coaches know exactly what they’re talking about.

The Houma-Thibodaux flavor is evident in local baseball brackets with several locals winning their opening-round games and punching tickets into the next round.

Currently, there are still eight local teams with a chance to win the state championship, including four teams who have won first-round games already.

The playoffs will resume throughout the weekend and by early next week, locals could be punching their tickets to Sulphur for the State Tournament.

CLASS 5A

In Class 5A, one local team slayed Goliath and another will have the chance to do so this weekend.

No. 30 H.L. Bourgeois shocked the entire state of Louisiana on Tuesday, scoring a 7-4 upset win over No. 3 Acadiana to move on to the Round of 16.

The Braves got both clutch hitting and pitching in the win over the annual state powerhouse program.

With the win, H.L. Bourgeois advances and will face No. 19 St. Amant in a weekend three-game series. The games will be at St. Amant.

While the Braves slayed Goliath already, the Central Lafourche baseball team will try and do the same this weekend.

The No. 16 Trojans crushed No. 17 Comeaux 12-4 on Tuesday in Mathews – advancing to the second round of the postseason.

With the win, Central Lafourche will now face No. 1 Zachary in a three-game series this weekend.

Zachary has several college signees and has been the top team in the state all year.

CLASS 4A/DIVISION II

Two locals took care of business in the Class 4A State Playoffs – both powered by pitching.

No. 21 South Terrebonne shutout No. 12 Assumption 5-0 on Tuesday – thanks to a shutout from Davis Arceneaux on the mound.

The Gators and Mustangs split their regular season meetings and the playoff win served as the rubber match.

The Gators will travel and face No. 5 West Ouachita this weekend.

While South Terrebonne is playing the role of road warrior pretty well, South Lafourche is taking care of its home field.

The No. 4 Tarpons scored a 10-0 mercy-rule win over No. 29 Beau Chene on Tuesday – scoring their first-ever playoff win.

Senior lefty Blake Ougel threw five shutout innings for South Lafourche, which got offense from both the top and bottom of its lineup in the win.

The Tarpons will host No. 13 Riverdale this weekend for a three-game slate in Galliano.

The Tarpons beat Riverdale 7-1 earlier this season in a non-district game.

While Class 4A is in high gear, Division II is not yet under way.

No. 8 E.D. White will play a series with No. 9 Loyola. The first game is this afternoon.

No. 11 Vandebilt travels and will start a series at No. 6 St. Charles today, as well.

DIVISION IV

In Division IV, two locals are still alive, though one is down to no margin of error.

No. 9 CCA split the first two games of their series with No. 8 Central Catholic, which pushed the two teams to a rubber game on Thursday. No score was available at the publication of our newsletter.

The winner of that game will face the winner of the series between No. 1 University Lab and No. 16 Lusher.

On the other end of the bracket, No. 4 Houma Christian will host No. 13 Vermilion Catholic for a best of three – beginning today.

See our paper edition for updates on how the series played out.
