The Nicholls State University cross country team will do something this weekend that it hasn’t done in more than two decades: It will host a home meet.

The Colonels will host the Nicholls Cross Country Invitational and the Dr. Richard Morvant Invitational Saturday at the Nicholls farm, the first time in 24 years that the Colonels have a meet to call their own.

“I’m excited for our men’s and women’s cross country teams to be able to compete at home,” Nicholls head coach Stefanie Slekis said. “The Nicholls Farm is just a short 7-minute drive from campus and our team has been able to work out on the course, so they will have a bit of a home field advantage when they compete.”

Tulane will be at the meet, as will UNO and Loyola.

Slekin said it will be a strong test for the youthful Colonels in advance of Southland Conference meets.

“We have two very young teams and the teams are just as excited as I am to line up and race and see how well we can compete against a ranked and conference opponent before moving forward with bigger goals for the season,” Slekis said.

The meet will begin at 7 a.m. with the Colonel Cross Country 3-mile – a race open to community members and alumni. Community members can register for $22.50 online or $25 on race day. All proceeds go to Nicholls track and cross country.

The University Women’s race will begin at 8 a.m. and will feature four teams.

The University Men’s race will begin 30 minutes later.

Once the college men and women run, Nicholls will also entertain the next generation of high school runners at the Dr. Richard Morvant Invitational.

This event, also at the Nicholls Farm, will begin at 9 a.m. and it will feature boys’ and girls’ races – both for varsity and junior varsity competition.

Nicholls is expecting 11 local schools to compete at the event.
