The Nicholls State University football team held their first scrimmage of fall camp this weekend in John L. Guidry Stadium.

The Colonels ran more than 100 plays in a controlled scrimmage.

The biggest explosion of the scrimmage came on the first play when Tahj Smith took a kickoff 95 yards to the house for a touchdown.

Nicholls coach Tim Rebowe said he believes all three phases – offense, defense and special teams – had both good and bad moments in the day.

The Colonels’ offense scored four touchdowns in the game, while the defense forced two takeaways and had three sacks.

QUARTERBACKS SHINE; TOP RECEIVER EMERGES

There is no quarterback controversy in Thibodaux, of course, as senior Chase Fourcade will start for a fourth-straight season.

Fourcade looked the part on Saturday, completing 8-of-15 passes for 134 yards and two scores. The two touchdowns were both to Dai’Jean Dixon – one a 57-yarder and another from 30 yards out.

Dixon had a huge scrimmage on Saturday, making 6 grabs for 135 yards and three touchdowns.

But there is a little bit of a battle brewing to be Fourcade’s backup in 2019 and possibly the Colonels’ next starter.

Kohen Granier was 4-of-6 with 72 yards with a touchdown on Saturday, while Caleb Lee was 2-of-2 for 22 yards. Freshman Andrew Robison had a 20-yard completion.

DEFENSE ENJOYS IMPACTFUL DAY

Defensively, Nicholls was without a few key pieces on Saturday, but the unit was still impactful.

Darren Evans had an interception and a sack in the afternoon, while Allen Pittman stripped the ball on a running play and scooped it up for a takeaway.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Aaron Buckwalter had a big day, posting 9 tackles.

If there was a sore thumb for Nicholls on Saturday, it was on special teams.

NICHOLLS’ KICKERS STRUGGLE

The Colonels did return the kickoff for a score and had other nice returns on the afternoon.

But the actual kicking game for Nicholls was not good. The Colonels converted just 5-of-12 field goals in the scrimmage.

Freshman Gavin Lasseigne was the lone bright spot, banging home both of his kicks.
