Nicholls State University head women’s soccer coach Robert Podeyn announced the signing of five more student-athletes, bringing the 2023 signing class to 12 players.

“We improved so much last season and this recruiting class was about getting faster, bigger and more athletic, Coach Podeyn said. “We had needs in different positions, and this class definitely addressed those needs.  We now have the talent and depth to compete.”


The additional signings for 2023 include three Spring additions and two Fall entries.  The signings include the following:

Peyton Bastine (Spokane Valley, WA.) – 5’6″- Defender

Peyton finished her Fall Season at Spokane Falls Community College earning All-NWACC First Team Honors and an All-Star Selection.  Her team completed a championship run by winning the NWACC Championship and finishing as one of the Top 3 junior college teams in the country.   Playing since she was 3 years old, Peyton has been a standout player in club for the Spokane Sounders who first competed at the DA Level and now the GAL Level, and for University High School where she was a 1st Team All-Conference Performer.

“Peyton is a very quick and skillful wing defender who likes to get involved in the attack.  She also has the added weapon of a long throw that can get inside the penalty area.  We are excited that Peyton is joining us this Spring and will make an impact in our team for the next two years”, said Coach Podeyn. Peyton joins Nicholls State University this Spring.


Alexa Deatherage (Spokane, WA.) – 5’7″- Attacking Central Midfielder

Alexa finished her Fall Season at Spokane Falls Community College earning All-NWACC First Team Honors, an All-Star Selection, and as the Final Four Tournament MVP.  Her team completed a championship run by winning the NWACC Championship and finishing as one of the Top 3 junior college teams in the country.   Alexa has been a standout player in club for the Spokane Sounders who first competed at the DA Level and now the GAL Level, and for North Central High School where she was a 1st Team All-Conference Performer and Offensive MVP.

“Alexa is a very quick and skillful attacking player who has a scoring instinct.  She is very attack-minded and is very creative and deliberate at looking forward.  We are excited that Alexa is joining us this Spring and will make an impact in our team for the next two years”, said Coach Podeyn. Alexa joins Nicholls State University this Spring.

Ryan Griep (Spokane, WA.) – 5’10”- Holding Central Midfielder

Ryan finished her Fall Season at Spokane Falls Community College as a two-year captain while earning All-NWACC First Team Honors and an All-Star Selection.  Her team completed a championship run by winning the NWACC Championship and finishing as one of the Top 3 junior college teams in the country.   Ryan was a 3-sport varsity player in high school as she played soccer, basketball, and softball excelling at all three.


“Ryan is a strong and physical presence  on the field and has shown incredible leadership skills everywhere she has been, including in the summers where she plays for WPSL side the Spokane Shadow.  She is a smart and intuitive player and does well at reading the opposing team.  We are excited that Ryan is joining us this Spring and will make an impact in our team for the next two years”, said Coach Podeyn. Ryan joins Nicholls State University this Spring.

Paula Capili (Pearl City, HI.) – 5’3″- Wing Attacker

Paula has been a member of one of the strongest high school programs in Hawaii at Pearl City High School and participates in club with the u19 Honolulu Boys Club Team.  Paula has been invited and identified in the Youth National Team ID Program where she gained attention as a very quick and deliberate wing attacker with strong 1v1 and dribbling skills.

“Paula is an exciting player to watch in the attack.   She is quick and technical and is difficult to defend.  Paula will be an exciting player to watch over the next four years”, said Coach Podeyn. Paula will begin her journey at Nicholls State University in the Fall of 2023.


Anna Thorhallsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) – 5’9″- Central Midfielder

Anna is a member of one of the top women’s club in Iceland, Vikingur FC, where she was recognized as the Best Player in the league at her age group in 2018.  She has always played up at least one age level and has been recognized as one of the best players at that age level.

“Anna is a very experienced and mature attacking player.  She is composed under pressure and has the instincts to create opportunities and to score goals.  We are excited to to see Anna play as a Colonel over the next four years”, said Coach Podeyn. Anna will begin her journey at Nicholls State University in the Fall of 2023.
