The Nicholls State University baseball team needed to win all three of its games this weekend, plus get some help to reach the Southland Conference Tournament.

The Colonels did their part on the field. They swept the University of New Orleans over three games, trumping the Privateers 5-4, 3-2 then 11-5 to end the regular season with a 14-16 record in the league.

But Nicholls didn’t get the help they needed around the league, climbing into a three-way tie for seventh place in the league, which wasn’t high enough to make the eight-team field because of tiebreaker rules.

The Colonels end their season with a 26-30 record.

They were playing their best baseball at the right time.

In the final week of the season, Nicholls had beaten nationally ranked Tulane before the weekend trumping of UNO.

But for the Colonels, the hot finish wasn’t enough to overcome a rocky first-half of the Southland season.

Nicholls had a lot of departures off last season’s 34-19-1 team and it took a while for the Colonels to get rolling in the new season.

The Colonels lost their first four Southland series, opening the conference schedule with just a 3-9 record.

The team rebounded, finishing 11-7 over its final six series, but it wasn’t enough to reach the field.
