Ellender is one win away from the Class 4A State Championship.

The Patriots beat Westgate 68-63 on Thursday afternoon in the Semifinals round of the LHSAA State Playoffs.

The Patriots overcame an early deficit, foul trouble and an injury to Askyrie Anderson to seal the win.

“It was a great effort by the kids,” Patriots coach Cornell Scott said. “Our kids fought. Give credit to Westgate. They battled, and we found a way.”

It was one hell of a game.

The Patriots opened on a 5-0 surge, but Westgate quickly came back, opening a double-digit lead in the first quarter.

Before halftime, Ellender took back momentum, out scoring the Tigers 20-8 in the quarter to take the lead.

In the second half, the team’s went back and forth, but the Patriots had an answer for all of Westgate’s runs.

Martin was monstrous in the final minutes, getting countless baskets and free throws to clinch the win.

The Patriots will take on Washington Marion on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Presale state basketball championship tickets are on sale starting today at Ellender High School for $10. A portion of the presale proceeds will go to the Ellender boys basketball team.
