What is the most challenging thing about bowling?

I think the most challenging thing is reading the lanes and being able to adjust to them. In bowling, there are a lot of different things you have to consider and sometimes it can be really tough if you can’t seem to find your mark. Lane conditions can be really challenging.

Best advice a coach has ever given you?

To not be so hard on myself. In bowling, sometimes it takes a little bit longer than usual to figure out the lanes, and if you get frustrated too quickly, then you will never figure them out.

Best bowling moment?

It was my junior year of high school. We won the state title as a team, and I won the runner-up in singles.

Best thing about being a collegiate bowler?

Well I haven’t had any collegiate matches yet, but so far, I can say that the practices are more advanced and helpful. It’s those one-on-one practices and being able to practice every day is really going to allow me to take my game to the next level. So the best thing for me is being able to advance my skills to be a better athlete.

What do you think of before a big match?

I try and relax and get in my own zone. I just want to focus on my own game and nothing else.

The Houma-Thibodaux area is well known for sending football, basketball and baseball players to the college levels to extend their careers. Now, we have added a bowler to the list. Vandebilt Catholic State Championship bowler and Golden Meadow native Colleen Cheramie is readying herself for her inaugural season on Southern University’s bowling team. Cheramie brings a rich pedigree to the Lady Jaguars’ program, winning both an individual and teamwide state championship while in high school.
