Prep Football Week 8 by the Numbers

5 – The number of touchdowns South Lafourche quarterback Colby Callais accounted for in Friday’s rivalry game win against Central Lafourche. The Tarpon quarterback threw for two scores and ran for three more in the win.

3 – The number of defensive touchdowns Covenant Christian Academy scored in a blowout win against Sophie B. Wright.

398 – The number of rushing yards South Terrebonne accumulated in a sound victory over Morgan City. The Gators pounded the Tigers early and often, continually controlling the line of scrimmage.

Week 8 players of the week:

Bronze: South Lafourche quarterback Colby Callais – In the always huge South Lafourche-Central Lafourche rivalry game, Callais was his usual dominant self, tossing for two scores and rushing for three more in a blowout win against the Trojans.

Silver: South Terrebonne halfback Christian Wallis and fullback Channing Champagne – In a road game against Morgan City, the South Terrebonne one-two punch combined for 322 yards rushing and four touchdowns to secure a much-needed victory.

Gold: Vandebilt quarterback Elijah McGuire – We truly could probably give McGuire gold every week, couldn’t we? The Vandebilt standout was superb in a triple overtime win, rushing for 268 yards on 25 carries with four scores. He also rushed for the decisive two-point conversion in the game, sealing the win.

The Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)

1. South Lafourche – With a win against rival Central Lafourche out of the way, the Tarpons appear poised to go 9-0. If they do, it’d make the first time any Tarpon football team completed the regular season undefeated. That’s a whale of an accomplishment for the football-rich program.

2. Vandebilt – I told Vandebilt people all week that Assumption could scare them. I mostly heard snide remarks of disbelief. But the Mustangs pushed Vandebilt to the limit in a triple-overtime thriller. Great teams find ways to win close, hard-fought games, though.

3. Terrebonne – The Tigers remain one of the most quiet success stories in the area with another win against H.L. Bourgeois. The race is on for Terrebonne to earn as many power points as possible with the playoffs looming. They are a true bubble team.

4. Central Catholic – Central Catholic’s early season struggles seem to be a thing of the past. The Eagles are resurfacing as a contender in Class 1A – exactly what we thought they’d be in the preseason.

5. E.D. White – E.D. White has rebounded from its midseason lull, earning another workmanlike victory. The Cardinals have a formula that usually equates to postseason success. Don’t be shocked if this team makes another run.

6. Patterson – After a slow start, Patterson is showing a lot of promise. It’s a shame that they likely won’t make the playoffs because of the LHSAA’s fraudulent power points system. Because clearly it’s Patterson’s fault that they have a weak district, right?

Vandebilt coach Brad Villavaso points instructions to his team during summer practices. The Terriers have been following the coach’s lead so far this season and are currently 7-1. Vandebilt’s latest win was a triple-overtime thriller against Assumption.
