Prep football Week 9 By the Numbers

8 – The number of consecutive wins Vandebilt has rattled home since a season-opening loss to E.D. White. The Terriers’ most recent triumph was a blowout win against Morgan City.

48 – The total first half points South Lafourche scored in a thrashing of H.L. Bourgeois. The Tarpons rolled to a 55-8 victory to keep its perfect season intact.

378 – In Thibodaux’s 43-14 rout of Central Lafourche, the Tigers mustered 378 total yards. With the win, Thibodaux likely ended Central Lafourche’s playoff chances.

Week 9 Players of the Week

Bronze: Vandebilt halfback Aaron Smith – With the playoffs looming, Vandebilt is actively looking for a reliable second option to play alongside Elijah McGuire. In Friday’s game against Morgan City, Smith fit the bill, rushing for 155 yards on 12 carries to give the Terriers another win.

Silver: Thibodaux athlete Donta Johnson – Playing the role of spoiler, Johnson gashed Central Lafourche early and often, rushing for 223 yards on 17 carries. The win marked the Tigers’ third of the season.

Gold: South Terrebonne’s defense – Stopping Ellender’s offense is one thing. Doing it while facing a former teammate in a rivalry game is another. In a fiercely contested battle among rivals pushing for the playoffs, the Gators’ defense stiffened and held the powerful Patriots’ offense without a point. The win preserved the Gators’ playoff hopes.

The Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)

1. South Lafourche – Sometimes when good teams play inferior foes, they play poorly and struggle with motivation. The Tarpons avoided that trap Friday against H.L. Bourgeois, dominating the first half en route to an easy 55-8 win. All that separates the Tarpons from an undefeated season is a road win against Thibodaux on Friday.

2. Vandebilt – After losing to E.D. White on opening day, I would not have expected Vandebilt to win the district championship. But the Terriers have proven me and everyone else wrong in what is becoming a special season. They will be a tough out in the Class 4A playoffs.

3. Central Catholic – We were critical of Central Catholic’s 2-3 start, but with the season almost complete, we now see that the Eagles’ losses have come to some of the top teams in Louisiana. Morgan City’s private school has won four games in a row and is really peaking.

4. Patterson – The Lumberjacks likely will not make the playoffs in Class 3A – a real travesty. Regardless of our state’s inept power rankings system, Patterson is playing better than a lot of teams in 3A right now. They have won four of their past five games and have not allowed a point since Oct. 11.

5. Terrebonne – The Tigers started fast, but combusted in the second half against New Iberia, suffering a blowout loss. But many teams in Class 5A will be blown out by New Iberia. Terrebonne is still easily among our area’s best.

6. E.D. White – No one in the Tri-parish area has lost more heartbreaking games in the past two seasons than E.D. White. The latest installment of the Cardiac Cardinals’ saga was a six-point defeat at Port Allen – a game that cost the team a chance at a shot at a district championship.

Quote of the Week

“We don’t dwell on it, but I think the kids understand the significance of it.”

-South Lafourche coach Dennis Skains on an undefeated season

South Lafourche quarterback Colby Callais readies for a shotgun snap during the second half of this week’s win against H.L. Bourgeois. The Tarpons are now one win away from an undefeated 2012 regular season.
