By The Numbers for Week 1 of the Prep Football Playoffs

2: Just two out of six local playoff teams survived the opening round of the playoffs on Friday night. Both came in Division II. Vandebilt Catholic pushed past Lusher on the road in a one-touchdown win. E.D. White stayed alive with an easier win against Loyola. The Terriers and Cardinals will now face the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state for Division II.

3: The South Lafourche football team marched into the red zone three times on Friday night against Bastrop. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Tarpons didn’t get any points out of the three trips, which allowed the Rams to control the action in an easy win.

48: The Central Lafourche football team liked where it stood midway through the first quarter on Friday night against Acadiana. The Trojans had just scored a touchdown on a long drive to tie the game at seven. But Acadiana dominated the action for the rest of the game, scoring 48-straight points to cruise to a win.

34: In a win or go home matchup with Lusher, Vandebilt rode sophomore halfback Brennan Rogers in a big way. The powerful halfback carried the ball 34 times in Friday night’s win, allowing Vandebilt to sustain drives.

Playoffs Week 1 Players of the Week

Bronze: South Lafourche halfback Corbin Allen – The Tarpons lost on Friday at Bastrop, but it wasn’t because of a lack of effort from Allen. The sophomore halfback had 130 yards rushing in the first half alone, using his strong, powerful style to challenge the Rams defense. He ended the game nearing 200 all purpose yards, setting the stage for what may be a great junior season.

Silver: E.D. White’s offensive line – It would be easy to give all of the glory to the E.D. White halfbacks and skill players after the team’s win against Loyola. But with more than 300 yards rushing and three players who either had or flirted with 100 yards rushing, some love has to go to the Cardinals’ big, physical offensive line.

Gold: Vandebilt Catholic halfback Brennan Rogers – Rogers was an absolute mule for Vandebilt on Friday night in the opening round of the Division II State Playoffs. The physical back rushed 34 times for 238 yards and three touchdowns to help guide the Terriers into the next round of the playoffs. Rogers is only a sophomore. He is going to be one of the leading bell cows in the Houma-Thibodaux area for the next two seasons.

The High-Five

1. E.D. White: The Cardinals have overcome so much adversity to make it all the way to this point in the season. To lose their starting quarterback and also several close, tight-fought games is not easy. But the Cardinals never waivered and are now in the Final 8 in Division II.

2. Vandebilt: The Terriers aren’t the most talented, but they do battle. Every, single Friday night, those guys battle and give a 100 percent effort. They’ll have their hands full on Friday against University, but the team surely will give it its best shot. We’ll see what happens.

3. Thibodaux: The Tigers faced a hot opponent in round one and were sent packing. Thibodaux has athletes galore on its depth chart and there’s absolutely no doubt that the Tigers will be among the short list of local contenders in 2016.

4. South Lafourche: To win six games without Harvey Allen ever taking a snap is an honor that South Lafourche’s kids should be incredibly proud of. With Jaydon Cheramie and Corbin Allen both back next fall, the Tarpons have a ton of total yards returning on an already good offense.

5. Central Lafourche: The Trojans sure did themselves proud. Coach Keith Menard does a great job with his team, and it was surely good to see those guys break the ice and finally reach the playoffs in Class 5A.
