Central Lafourche – 42

Vandebilt – 35

It will be hard for any other game to top this one for game of the year in 2016. This game had literally everything, including 11 touchdowns, multiple lead changes, last-minute turnovers and a goal line stand at the 1-yard line to seal the Trojans victory.

Ellender – 47

H.L. Bourgeois – 14

The Patriots get the first win of the David McCormick Era in decisive fashion, walloping H.L. Bourgeois over at Terrebonne High School’s field. The Patriots have athletes galore, and they can score in abundance. They are a much improved group – a team that’s going to have a chance to win every, single time they take the field throughout the 2016 football season. Congrats to Coach McCormick.

Terrebonne – 38

South Terrebonne – 6

South Terrebonne’s woes continued on Friday night, and the Gators still haven’t yet scored an offensive touchdown on the season. For Terrebonne, their spirits are riding high, and a huge matchup with Assumption awaits.

Thibodaux – 45

East Ascension – 24

Thibodaux was never going to stay down for very long. The Tigers drove down the field with ease on Friday night, scoring their first win of the season. Thibodaux is about to enter a stretch of their schedule where they can do some damage.

Carver – 28

South Lafourche – 27

South Lafourche scored literally every time it had the ball in the first half, taking a 27-14 lead into halftime over the visiting Rams. But Carver made adjustments and stiffened. The end result was a comeback victory over the home Tarpons.

Lakeshore – 27

E.D. White – 23

E.D. White lost a tough one on Friday night, dropping to 0-2 after a close tilt with Lakeshore. The Cardinals are young, and it’s showing on the field. By mid-season, they’ll be much better. They’re well-coached and they’re always one of those teams that peak when the games matter most.

CCA – 13

Hannan – 12

People discount Class 1A football, but folks, CCA has a really, really good club. The Lions are now 2-0 after a one-point thriller against Hannan. Next up is a stiff test from Gueydan – a team looking for its first win of the season. But the Lions are going to be up to the challenge. They are easily one of the best teams in the always-loaded Division IV.

False River – 35

Houma Christian – 14

The Warriors had an early lead, but it never materialized from there, falling to a very good False River team. The Warriors have a tough challenge Friday against a solid Sacred Heart team. Houma Christian is much better in 2016. Coach Chuck Battaglia is doing a good job working with those boys. That program has come a long way in a short amount of time. The school should be awfully proud.

Next week’s schedule

South Terrebonne @ C. Lafourche

H.L. Bourgeois @ S. Plaquemines

Terrebonne @ Assumption

South Lafourche @ Thibodaux

Bonnabel @ Ellender

St. Charles @ Vandebilt

St. James @ E.D. White

Gueydan @ CCA

Houma Christian @ Sacred Heart

Week 2 Players of the Week

Honorable mention: CCA’s defense – For the second-straight week, a defense wins our honorable mention – this time the group from Covenant Christian earning the honor. The Lions are now 2-0 on the season after beating Hannan 13-12. The CCA defenders held strong throughout the game, which allowed the team the opportunity to secure the win.

Bronze: Vandebilt quarterback Andrew Robison – I feel like Robison will be on this list every, single week of the season. The dynamite Terriers’ quarterback had five touchdown passes on Friday, coming just short of a thrilling win over Central Lafourche.

Silver: Central Lafourche receivers David Robinson and Kenneth Poindexter – The one-two punch of Trojans receivers were huge on Friday night, combining for countless catches and more than 200 yards in Central Lafourche’s win over Vandebilt Catholic.

Gold: Ellender athlete Davontavean Martin – There is no one locally who affects a game in more ways than Martin does for the Patriots. The Tulane-bound standout made huge plays in special teams, in the passing game and in the running game for Ellender on Friday, helping lead them past H.L. Bourgeois.

The High-Five

1. Central Lafourche: The Trojans have been behind by double-digits for two-straight weeks. Both times, they rallied and found a way to win. That has to count for something. Coach Keith Menard has his boys believing in the magic in Mathews, and that magic is a powerful thing.

2. Thibodaux: After losing in Week 1, the Tigers bounced back in a big way, walloping a very good East Ascension squad on Friday. I’d like to see a little more passing offense from the Tigers going forward, but right now, their running game is darn good, too.

3. Vandebilt:  To finish one yard short of overtime against Central Lafourche isn’t too bad. But to be ahead by one point AND have the football with 2:30 to go isn’t a good look. The Terriers have to close the door on that one to reach the next level.

4. Terrebonne: The Tigers are quietly 2-0, scoring consecutive blowouts over inner-city rivals. The Tigers have a ground game that’s tough to deal with. They should match up quite nicely on Friday with powerful Assumption.

5. CCA: The Lions are now 2-0 on the season after a hard-fought win over Hannan. CCA doesn’t have the bodies that other schools in the state do. But those kids sure have heart. They’re not an easy out for anyone they play.

By The Numbers for Week 2 of the Prep Football Season

17: The South Lafourche football team scored four-straight touchdowns in the first half against Carver – offensive success which helped the team build a 27-14 halftime lead. But in the second half, the Rams stiffened and the Tarpons gained just 17 total yards, which allowed Carver to come back and win.

4: The Central Lafourche and Vandebilt game featured 11 touchdowns and more than 900 yards of total offense. But in the end, it was the Trojans defense which stood tall, stopping the Terriers on four-straight drives to end the game, which helped secure a comeback win.

3: The 2016 season is only two weeks young, but already we have just three undefeated teams left in the Houma-Thibodaux area. That would be Central Lafourche, CCA and Terrebonne – all three currently sitting at 2-0 in the standings.

0: South Terrebonne’s offense is still scoreless on the 2016 season after being shut out again on Friday night against Terrebonne. The Gators scored in the game, but it was on a special teams play. South Terrebonne’s offense hasn’t punched the ball into the end zone yet this season.
