Prep Football Week 7 by the Numbers

4 – The number of unbeaten teams remaining in Class 5A. South Lafourche is one of those teams after scoring a road win against New Iberia. Joining the Tarpons are Parkway, Jesuit and Rummel.

263 – The number of all-purpose yards Vandebilt’s Elijah McGuire accumulated in a win against H.L. Bourgeois. One week after going past 1,000 yards rushing for the season, McGuire added 211 more rushing yards to his tally.

362 – The number of rushing yards Terrebonne mustered against Thibodaux’s defense in a big district win. With victory, the Tigers improved to 4-3 on the season.

Week 7 players of the week:

Bronze: Vandebilt quarterback Elijah McGuire – Against H.L. Bourgeois, McGuire was his usual dominant self, rushing for 211 yards on 11 carries, while passing for 52 more yards. The Terriers’ standout scored four touchdowns in Vandebilt’s rout.

Silver: Terrebonne quarterback Colby Stewart – In a sound victory over Thibodaux, Stewart played his best game this season, completing six-of-seven passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 162 yards and two scores.

Gold: South Lafourche athlete Treavon Evans – In the biggest game within the Tri-parish area this season, Evans played huge, willing South Lafourche to victory with five catches for 107 yards with a touchdown on offense and two interceptions on defense. To top it off, Evans recovered a New Iberia onside kick with less than a minute to play to ice the Tarpons’ victory. Offense, defense and special teams earn the Tarpon the gold medal honors.

The Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)

1. South Lafourche – Critics can no longer say that South Lafourche hasn’t beaten a quality opponent. The Tarpons went into New Iberia Friday and scored a huge win against an elite team in a very well-played game. The Tarpons are now three wins away from the elusive undefeated season.

2. Vandebilt – Vandebilt wasn’t its best Friday, but they pushed forward and earned another sound victory. The Terriers will have to be much better Friday night in a road tilt with Assumption, who is rounding into form.

3. Terrebonne – Terrebonne is so up and down, topsy-turvy every week. On Friday, they put together their best offensive performance of the season, routinely pounding Thibodaux’s defense in the gut. Terrebonne is quietly 3-1 in district play – a sleeper to steal a share of the title if South Lafourche slips up.

4. Central Catholic – After underwhelming early in the season, Central Catholic is beginning to find its peak. After a 56-point effort, it’s safe to assume the team’s offense is playing some of its best football.

5. E.D. White – After skidding in the past two games, E.D. White got back on track and scored a routine win against Donaldsonville. The Cardinals are still on pace to enter the Class 3A playoffs among the top seeds.

6. Ellender – Just when one writes Ellender off, they come back with fury. The Patriots won a thriller against Morgan City on Thursday night, holding the Tigers out of the end zone on a last-second two point conversion try to secure a one-point win.

Patterson tight end Deondre Skinner runs through a drill at a Lumberjacks’ practice. The elite tight end helped lead Patterson to a 56-28 win on Friday, which pushed the team to  4-3 on the season and 2-2 in district play.
