Week 7 Players of the Week

Honorable mention: Ellender Memorial offensive line – The Patriots got their first district win of the season on Friday night, using a dominant performance at the line of scrimmage to push past Morgan City in decisive fashion.

Bronze: Thibodaux halfback Donnell Adair – The bruising halfback can win gold every single week if we really wanted to continually hand him the honor. Adair was dominant again on Friday in a Thibodaux win. He rushed for 182 yards and a touchdown on Friday night against H.L. Bourgeois – the Tigers’ fifth-straight win on the season.

Silver: South Lafourche halfback Corbin Allen – The Tarpons sophomore halfback was a beast on Friday night against Vandebilt. Allen rushed for 142 yards on 25 carries, including a game-winning touchdown with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. He also caught a touchdown pass on fourth and goal to cut into the Terriers lead.

Gold: Houma Christian athlete Devin Battaglia – The Houma Christian senior has had a great season for the Warriors. On Friday, he was at his absolute best, catching five passes for 71 yards, while also scoring an interception return for a touchdown and an 80-yard punt return for a score.

The High-Five

1. Thibodaux: The Tigers keep rocking and rolling toward the Class 5A State Playoffs. After an 0-2 start, Thibodaux is now playing its best football of the season. The Tigers need to stay on a roll, because they close the season with St. Augustine, Hahnville and Destrehan.

2. South Lafourche: The Tarpons played very sluggishly for a half against Vandebilt, falling behind 31-18 after two quarters against the motivated Terriers. But a two-touchdown, 14-0 second-half rally powered South Lafourche to 2-0 in district play against a very motivated Vandebilt squad.

3. Central Lafourche: The Trojans lost to Destrehan on Friday night. Who cares? Just about every other team in Louisiana would do the same. That Central Lafourche could keep the Wildcats to just 31 points is something worth noting. When the schedule softens, the Trojans will get back into the win column.

4. H.L. Bourgeois: The Braves drop a few spots after getting bullied by Thibodaux on Friday night. But with five wins already in the bag, H.L. Bourgeois is still in a great spot to reach the Class 5A Playoffs.

5. CCA: It’s not been an easy year for CCA. The Lions have battled all sorts of injuries and adversity. But CCA is hitting its stride at the right time and is in prime position to make a run at the District Championship, which would mean an automatic bid into the playoffs.

By The Numbers for Week 7 of the Prep Football Season

427: The dominant Thibodaux High School rushing offense was huge on Friday night against H.L. Bourgeois, powering forward for 427 yards to trump the Braves. Thibodaux has now rushed for 400 or more yards in five-straight games.

15: Houma Christian quarterback Damien Pennison had one of his best passing games of the season on Friday night against Ridgewood. The young passer completed 15 throws on just 17 tries to lead Houma Christian.

2: After Friday night’s thrilling, one-point game between South Lafourche and Vandebilt, there are now just two teams undefeated in District 7-4A. That would be the Tarpons and Assumption. South Lafourche beat Vandebilt 32-31. The Mustangs easily trumped South Terrebonne.

343: The Covenant Christian Academy football team rushed for 343 yards on Friday night against Varnado, earning a huge victory in district play. The Lions spread the football out in its offense, using five players to get yards.

8: With senior quarterback Ben Sposito on the shelf with an injury, the E.D. White passing offense stumbled to a halt against Patterson. The Cardinals passed for just eight yards in Friday’s blowout loss, turning over the ball four times in the game.

Week 7 Scores:

Destrehan – 31

Central Lafourche – 7

The Trojans battled the mighty Wildcats for a half, but couldn’t hold up for 48 minutes, losing for the second-straight time for the first time in 2015. The Trojans are now 4-3 and have to draw a line in the sand and stop the bleeding before things get out of control.

Thibodaux – 49

H.L. Bourgeois – 28

The Tigers rush for 400-plus in another win, overpowering the Braves defense in their fifth-straight win. The Tigers hit you in a variety of directions and always find ways to hustle into the end zone. That’s a heck of a team in northern Lafourche Parish. They’ll surely be capable of making a playoff push in the always-tough Class 5A.

Lakeshore – 31

Terrebonne – 13

The Tigers lose for the fifth-straight week – this time at the hands of a Lakeshore team that is among the best in Class 4A. The Tigers schedule doesn’t end easy. Terrebonne closes the year with East St. John, Central Lafourche and H.L. Bourgeois. They need to win out to reach the playoffs.

Assumption – 34

South Terrebonne – 14

The Gators keep getting better and better in their rebuilding process, but it’s just not quite enough to get a victory over an Assumption team that is one of the front-runners in District 7-4A. The Mustangs will face a huge challenge on Friday against Vandebilt. The Terriers are gradually improving throughout the season.

Ellender – 43

Morgan City – 2

So much for Morgan City being a relevant contender, eh? The Patriots smashed the Tigers by a blowout to keep their playoff hopes alive in Class 4A. Up next is a huge showdown with South Lafourche on Thursday night.

South Lafourche – 32

Vandebilt – 31

Holy Toledo! The game of the night on Friday was in Buddy Marcello between the Terriers and Tarpons. South Lafourche overcame a two-score deficit in the fourth quarter to push past Vandebilt, who drops to 2-5 on the season.

Patterson – 40

E.D. White – 14

The Cardiac Cardinals got flat-lined on Friday against a dominant Patterson passing attack that is rounding into gear after a slow start to the season. E.D. White must regroup now against a stout North Vermilion team on Friday night.

CCA – 27

Varnado – 14

For the first time this season, CCA’s football team earns consecutive victories. This particular one was huge. It gives the Lions a great chance at winning the district championship.

H. Christian – 43

Ridgewood – 28

Houma Christian gets the award for local team who has improved the most throughout the season. The Warriors have now won two-straight and three of their past four games to inch closer to .500 on the season.
