One of the best defensive backs in the country for the 2019 college football season is a local product who said he’s as hungry as ever to try and solidify his future in the game.

Thibodaux graduate and rising Louisiana Tech junior Amik Robertson is red-hot right now after posting two-straight dominant seasons on the edges for the Bulldogs — establishing himself as an All-Conference player and a prospect on some NFL Draft boards going forward.

Robertson said he’s working hard to try and get better, adding that he’s never one to rest and be content with success.

But he said he also takes time to stop and thank God for what he calls a “huge blessing” — a collegiate career that has a chance to get even better this fall.

“It’s been a blessing and I thank God every day,” Robertson said. “But it’s kind of something I expected because I put in a lot of work that no one else sees. I’m far from satisfied. I still have a lot of stuff to clean up. I want my junior season to be my best season by far.”

If this year is truly Robertson’s best, then he will have one heck of a season — given the lofty bar he’s set for himself.

Robertson has been an instant-impact performer for Louisiana Tech since signing with them out of Thibodaux High.

In high school, Robertson was an all-everything type player. He played just about every skill position and was a threat on special teams.

He collected offers from dozens of schools during his recruitment before picking the Bulldogs because he said the program felt like him.

At the time of his signing, Thibodaux football coach Chris Dugas said Louisiana Tech had gotten “a steal.”

Robertson is somewhat undersized, standing just 5-feet, 9-inches. But he makes up for his slight frame with elite football intelligence and instincts for the ball.

Robertson said he plays with the mindset of one LSU great, but the ball-hawking abilities of another.

“I feel like I have the mind of Patrick Peterson, because I try to be the most consistent cornerback in the game,” Robertson said. “But I also play with passion, energy and competitiveness like the Honey Badger, though. So, it’s kind of hard to compare me to anyone.”

“He’s a terrific football player and a terrific kid,” Dugas said. “He’s a guy who did everything we asked of him and he did it all selflessly. Amik showed up to work every day and on Friday nights, he gave us every, single ounce of energy he had in his tank. At the next level, he’s going to make an impact.”

The coach’s words proved right.

As a freshman, Robertson burst onto the scene — a day-one starter in Louisiana Tech’s secondary and also an immediate-impact player.

Robertson posted 62 tackles in his first season with 2 sacks. He recorded 5 interceptions and defended 11 passes. He scored Freshman All-American honors for his work.

But last year, Robertson was even better.

In 2018, Robertson had the attention of every opponent on Louisiana Tech’s schedule, but he somehow found a way to still have an impact — even while quarterbacks made it a point to throw the opposite way.

He recorded 61 tackles, snagged 4 interceptions and defended 16 passes. Robertson forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and also blocked two kicks in special teams.

He was named All-Conference USA and has solidified himself as one of the best players in the country.

But Robertson is not content, nor stagnant.

He said he’s working hard this summer in an effort to be the best version of himself possible. He said his summer so far has been productive, adding that he’s going to continue to work hard leading up to the start of fall camp in August.

“I’m trying to get bigger, stronger and smarter,” Robertson said. “I’m learning schemes, also, because it helps to slow the game down. My goal as a junior is to become a better leader. I want to be labeled as the best cornerback in the nation, being a lockdown cornerback. I want to not give up any touchdowns and, most importantly, we want to win the conference championship.”

If all or most of those things happen, there is a good chance, scouts could come calling for Robertson to consider the NFL Draft after his junior season.

He said he knows the NFL is out there, but added that he’s not focused on the pros right now. He wants to be the best amateur player he can be. From there, the rest will take care of itself.

“It’s a blessing and it’s an amazing feeling. Trust me, it is,” Robertson said of his professional prospects. “But right now, I’m more focused on improving mentally, physically and helping my team win. Right now, I’m on God’s time. I’ll think about the NFL when I’m ready. Right now, I have a lot of work to put in and improve my game. I’m far from where I want to be, so that’s my main focus right now — getting better.”
