One of the most popular New Orleans Saints players will suit up for another team in the 2014-15 NFL season.

Veteran wide receiver Lance Moore confirmed via Twitter on Friday afternoon that his career with the team had come to an end.

Moore, 30, played for nine seasons with New Orleans and had accumulated 346 catches, 4,281 yards and 38 touchdowns in his career before his release.

“Thank you New Orleans for an amazing nine years,” Moore said via his official Twitter page. “Who Dat Nation, the best on earth!!!”

Moore’s release is purely a financial decision – a move that was made to allow the team to have a better chance to keep another pass catcher on the team’s roster.

Moore was set to make $3.8 million in 2014, and the Saints will save more than $2 million by releasing him from his contract.

That $2 million will give the Saints a little more freedom in their long-term contract negotiations with tight end Jimmy Graham, who is currently seeking a multi-year contract that pays him upwards of $10 million per season.

The Saints placed the non-exclusive rights franchise tag on Graham last week, which means that he is free to negotiate with any team in free agency.

But the Saints have the option to match any contract Graham signs. If New Orleans doesn’t match an offer Graham signs, the tight end’s new team would need to forfeit two first round picks to the Saints in exchange for the tight end’s services.

The Saints also announced this week that they will release veteran tailback Darren Sproles – a move that will save the team more money against its cap.

Sproles, 30, established himself as one of the most dynamic players in the NFL while on the Saints’ roster.

But with the emergence of young tailback Khiry Robinson, Sproles was able to be expendable to the team.
