Terrebonne High School junior defensive lineman Maason Smith is now officially a 5-star prospect.
Recruiting service 24/7 Sports gave Smith his 5th star yesterday afternoon — upgrading him after some of the successful work he’s put in over the summer at camps around the country. Players are graded from one star to five. To be a five-star player is the highest honor a recruit can earn.
Smith is a prodigy — the No. 22 player in the country for the Class of 2021. He’s also the top ranked player in the state for the 2021 class.
Still uncommitted, he’s generating scholarship offers from just about everyone around the country — a literal who’s who of college football blue bloods, including LSU, Alabama, Florida and others.
Smith is the first-ever Terrebonne Parish five-star player — in any sport — since modern recruiting services have started ranking players (in the early 2000s).
In Lafourche, Thibodaux’s Greg Robinson flirted with it as a senior, but was a four-star. Smith’s teammate, Jakhi Douglas, is also currently a four-star player and a Florida State University commitment.
“It’s a dream come true,” Smith said earlier this year when asked about how much his recruitment has grown. “But I’m never satisfied. There’s still more work to be done.”
Smith is a monstrous force defensively for the Terrebonne football team.
He stands 6-feet, 4-inches and weighs 316 pounds, but he possesses the athleticism of a man far smaller than that massive size.
On 24/7 Sports, Smith is graded as: “A big, burly defensive lineman with great height and mass relative to age. Owns virtually college-ready size with frame space to continue adding bulk.”
Smith’s recruiting profile has grown over the past several months after a strong sophomore season and dominant showings at camps around the circuit.
He started as a 3-star prospect, then quickly rose to a low-end, then high-end 4-star player as his list of offers continued to grow.
Smith seemingly acknowledged his accomplishment on social media yesterday afternoon, tweeting just after the fifth star was announced.
“I’m everywhere they said I couldn’t go and I’m doing everything they said I couldn’t do,” Smith tweeted.
Terrebonne football coach Gary Hill said Smith’s progression is marked by his work ethic — one which Hill described as among the best he’s ever been around.
The Tigers’ football coach said Smith works tirelessly to better himself, but added quickly that he remains a humble teammate — even as his profile grows.
“He’s a humble kid,” Hill said. “He’s a leader on our football team and he’s been that way for a while — even though he’s technically still one of the younger guys. He leads by example by always coming in and putting in an honest day’s work. Maason is a great kid and he deserves everything that comes his way.”
