Prep Football Week 2 By the Numbers:

4: The number of punts South Lafourche blocked in Friday night’s shellacking of South Plaquemines in Galliano. The Tarpons scooped two of the punts up for touchdowns. Two others were safeties in the decisive win.

729: Prior to this past weekend, H.L. Bourgeois’ last win was on Sept. 14, 2012 – a 20-18 triumph over Ellender. A total of 729 days and 19 games have passed since then, but the Braves got back in the winner’s circle, again bursting past Ellender in a close contest.

4: We’ve only played two games in the 2014 prep football season, but the Tri-parish area is already down to just four unbeaten teams out of our 11 schools in competition. Lafourche Parish is easily dominating that mix with Central Lafourche, Thibodaux and E.D. White all holding 2-0 marks. South Terrebonne is also unbeaten after a close, hard-fought home win against cross-town rivals Terrebonne.

258: Down 21-12 and not wanting to lose for the first time this season, South Terrebonne halfback Cristian Wallis took over. The halfback rushed for more than 200 yards and had a receiving score to accumulate 258 all-purpose yards, while leading the Gators’ comeback win against Terrebonne. The win served as a bit of redemption for South Terrebonne, who fell 27-17 to Terrebonne last season.

Week 2 Players of the Week:

Bronze: Thibodaux halfback Jayquan Chenier – This could have easily gone to Tigers’ quarterback Peyton Bonvillain, who was absolutely dynamite with 166 yards on the ground with a touchdown. But we’re going to salute Chenier, who busted forward for 116 yards with three touchdowns on just 19 carriers. That Thibodaux offense is a joy to watch. They’ll be a major player in how the 2014 season shakes out.

Silver: South Terrebonne halfback Cristian Wallis – Look, on any other week, this would have been the gold medal performance, but we think that honor belongs to someone else on this week. But that still doesn’t take anything at all away from Wallis, who was an absolute terror against Terrebonne, gashing the Tigers for a little more than 200 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. He is the straw that stirs the drink that is the Gators’ explosive offense. We fully expect this young man to be getting gold here in the coming weeks as the prep football season continues to play itself out.

Gold: The H.L. Bourgeois football team – Listen, we hate to give blanket awards to multiple people because it takes the creativity and the fun out of picking three standout players from a pool of about 500 players who compete in our area. But this week, we think everyone who suits up for the H.L. Bourgeois Braves deserves the gold medal. The Braves lost 19-straight games prior to their 26-22 triumph over Ellender. The beauty of prep football is that the players on the field entertaining us are kids. Mark me down as someone happy to see those kids in Gray finally get something positive to celebrate.

The High-Five

1. Thibodaux – There’s a new top dog atop our list, and that’s Thibodaux – the mean machine that seems to routinely rush for 300-400 yards a game. How the Tigers will respond if their running game gets bottled up and they are forced to pass? We’ll never know until we see it, I suppose. But if they can pound the ball down Shaw and Vandebilt’s throats, then we certainly think that they will be able to have their way with most anyone that they play this season. These guys are good, and they are a very deserving No. 1 through two weeks.

2. South Terrebonne – Last week’s No. 1 will take a step back after struggling for a lot of the game against Terrebonne. But at the end of the day, a win is a win, and I think the mighty Gators will have a very good shot to return to No. 1 before long. As long as Cristian Wallis roams that South Terrebonne sideline, the Gators have a chance in any game that they play in 2014. We fully expect the Gators to make a deep playoff push on the public side of the Class 4A State Playoff bracket.

3. E.D. White – For a second-straight week, E.D. White won a tough, hard-fought home tilt, this time against St. James. It remains to be seen how much longer the Cardinals can win close games at the end, but they’ll surely enjoy their spotlight until someone takes it away.

4. South Lafourche – We tried to warn you all last week not to read too much into South Lafourche’s big loss at Landry-Walker. As we predicted, the Tarpons roared all over South Plaquemines, blocking four punts to create two touchdowns and two safeties off of special teams plays. South Lafourche will receive a very stiff test on Friday when Shaw comes to town – a team that blasted the Tarpons on a Thursday night last season.

5. Central Lafourche – It almost feels like déjà vu for the Trojans, who are 2-0 for the second-straight season after blasting Clark at home. Now, we will find out exactly what the Trojans are made of. This week, Central Lafourche hosts Mandeville – an 0-2 team that will be hungry for a win after competing with two of the best teams in Louisiana. After that, the team will head into Bayou District play.

Quote of the Week:

“It feels good. I’m so happy for the kids. I’m so happy for the people who support our program, and I’m so happy for our community. My message was, ‘Now that we got one, let’s go get another one next week.’ That’s the mindset and mentality that we all have to have – get another one next week. We’re not happy with just one win.”

-H.L. Bourgeois coach Daron Franklin on the team’s first win since Sept. 2012

Thibodaux quarterback Peyton Bonvillain breaks through the defense during Friday night’s win at Vandebilt Catholic. The Tigers’ powerful rushing offense roared past the Terriers, improving the team to 2-0 on the young season. The Tigers are now No. 1 in our High-Five rankings after week two’s slate of games. Thibodaux will play Assumption this week in a rivalry game.
