Everyone locally knows Jewel Triggs is one heck of a basketball player.

Now, her ability to lead and succeed off the floor has been publicized, as well.

Triggs was recently chosen to represent George Mason University athletics on the President-Student Advisory Group – the lone student-athlete on the 16-member council that meets with George Mason University President Angel Cabrera twice a week to talk about University issues.

Triggs said to be chosen is an honor, adding that she takes her job as “a voice” for the university’s student-athletes seriously.

“This is a huge honor to me,” Triggs said. “Being able to meet with the president and a few other students on campus is a big honor. The goal of the council is to talk about new programs, new things coming to campus. I am basically a voice, a representative for all of Mason student-athletes.”

Triggs was chosen because she’s impressing her superiors and peers.

A Thibodaux High School graduate, Triggs was selected for the honor by George Mason senior associate athletic director Nena Rogers. Rogers said she picked Triggs because of her involvement on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), as well as her experience at the Atlantic 10 Leadership Summit and her understanding of the overall mission of the athletics department.

Triggs is a kinesiology major. She will be beginning her junior season at George Mason in the fall.

She said she became interested in furthering her off-court leadership responsibilities after serving as a representative for Mason at the Atlantic 10 Leadership Summit last April in Washington D.C.

“When I first came here, I wasn’t really one to say anything,” Triggs said. “I was in the background. Now, I think I’ve stepped up in being a better leader on the court.”

“She is a wonderful individual and I thought she would represent us well,” Rogers added, when asked of Triggs. “She is on SAAC and they have a pulse of what is going on on campus. She will represent the student-athletes well. She had the A-10 training for leadership and fit all the right pieces.”
