The storied Vandebilt Catholic softball team has grown accustomed to magical things happening when they grace the beautiful dirt fields in Sulphur for the Fastpitch 56 Softball Tournament.

This year, their magic wand just didn’t have the same muster it usually does.

Vandebilt experienced a rare exit in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Thanks to a combination of Lady Terrier errors and timely hitting from Teurlings Catholic, the Lady Rebels avenged an early season loss to Vandebilt and scored a 8-4 win.

Teurlings Catholic stayed hot throughout the weekend and walked out of the tournament as the state champions.

Vandebilt went home with a 24-7 final record and their earliest postseason exit since 2009.

It didn’t appear early on that Friday afternoon’s game would be a bad one for the Lady Terriers.

Vandebilt scored in the first inning on an RBI double from senior Sarah Ourso, which plated Courney Lovoi.

That lead held up until the fourth inning when the Lady Rebels started to make better swings against Lady Terriers’ senior pitcher Leah Bergeron.

The Lady Rebels scratched home one run in the fourth-inning rally, mustering three-straight singles to tie the game at 1.

After getting out of the pickle with just one run allowed, Teurlings exploded in the game’s late innings to blow the game open.

The Lady Rebels plated two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run blast from Morgan Angelle, which gave Teurlings a 3-1 lead.

Not known for her power stroke, Angelle’s dinger gave Teurlings the muster it needed to roll offensively.

“This home run really got us going,” Angelle told The Advertiser. “I believe so much in my team and I just wanted to do whatever I could to help us win. It just happened to work out perfectly.”

Vandebilt answered that rally with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Ourso.

But the Lady Terriers couldn’t continue to match firepower with the eventual state champions, as the Lady Rebels pounded home three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh inning to push them to the next round.

Bergeron pitched a complete game for Vandebilt, allowing 13 hits and two walks in the circle.

She ends her prep career as one of the top pitchers in Vandebilt history.

“”Winning is a fantastic feeling,” Teurlings Catholic pitcher Julienne Broussard told The Advertiser. “I’m just happy that we get to keep playing and that our season isn’t over.”

Vandebilt didn’t get that luxury and their 2012 mission has now come to an end.

With a young team, the Lady Terriers are sure to be back in Sulphur in the very near future.

But this time around, their coveted magic wand just couldn’t quite muster up the magic needed for a deep playoff push.

Vandebilt pitcher Leah Bergeron fires a pitch during a game this season. Bergeron and the Lady Terriers were bounced from the state playoffs this past week.
