Apparently the critics were wrong about UL-Lafayette freshman halfback Elijah McGuire.

After battling naysayers throughout high school who doubted his size and ability to play offense at the college level, McGuire scored the last laugh this week when he was named the Sun Belt Conference’s 2013 Freshman of the Year.

McGuire earned the honor after rushing for 818 yards on 92 carries this season – enough to own the nation’s best yards per carry average.

McGuire also scored seven rushing touchdowns, while catching 15 passes for 290 yards with three scores.

He was one of 11 Ragin’ Cajun players to be honored by the conference, which announced its All-Sun Belt teams.

“These honors reflect the hard work and dedication and a commitment to excellence that these players have made throughout their careers,” UL-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth said.

McGuire and the Cajuns will take the field this week for their final game of the season.

UL-Lafayette will play Tulane in the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday.
